A baby boy due in 6 weeks
By anonymous on 24/11/2012
I've always been very careful with contraception and never thought an unplanned pregnancy would happen to me, well it did, and from a one night affair.
I'd known and liked the guy for a year but this was our first time being intimate. Finding out I was pregnant was a real shock.
I'm 33 and had never been down this road before. I was lost as to what to do. I'd returned to college as a mature student, didn't have much money and was living overseas.
The baby's father was adamant he didn't want to support me and wanted me to abort. My own father suggested the same. I also received vicious hate mail from the "ex" girlfriend.
Amongst all this turmoil I did make the booking to have my baby aborted, twice. Both times I cancelled the day before knowing in my heart it was the wrong thing for me to do.
Thankfully I found solace in a couple of women friends and an excellent social worker who counselled me through. I also made the decision to return to my home country where social and financial supports are more readily available. My baby boy is due in 6 weeks I now have the support of my family and feel excited about the times ahead. I would urge other women who find themselves in a similar situation not to be coerced by outside influences and to follow their intuition. It's a decision only you can make.

It must have taken a lot of courage to continue your pregnancy with so little support initially. I am glad you now have a good support framework and feel excited about your future. I agree that you should never allow yourself to make a decision based on pressure from others. You have to live with that decision for the rest of your life so you need to be sure of it yourself.
