Abortion is scary and an awful experience, I'm not going to sugar coat it, but it's so worth it

I was only 17 at the time and I had been with my boyfriend for around 9 months when I found out I was pregnant. Although my boyfriend and I were happy I was far too young and sitting AS levels so having a baby was absolutely out of the question.

I had my first consultation about two weeks after I officially did a test at the doctors and this involved a scan to see how far along the pregnancy was and a little talk about future contraceptive plans along with blood tests etc.

My first consultation was on Wednesday and I swallowed my first tablet on Saturday.

I vomited quite a bit on Sunday but this is just a side effect and it was bearable. I had terrible tummy cramps on Monday and then went into the hospital on Tuesday to give birth to the pregnancy as I was about 12 + 3 weeks.

I got to the hospital by bus and I remember standing up on the bus and two massive blood clots just falling out of me, it felt like I had wet myself and there was blood everywhere but I was glad because it meant things were going as planned.

I got onto the ward and changed my trousers and the nurse offered me some tea and toast and biscuits, they were the most lovely two ladies!

After this, I was examined with a plastic instrument which opened my cervix and this was uncomfortable but bearable. The nurse then inserted some tablets vaginally which wasn't that bad and was over relatively quickly.

At about 10, after I'd laid in bed for an hour I was allowed to get up and walk round to encourage the pregnancy to come out. I jumped up and down the stairs, skipped across the halls and did jumping jacks in my room with my supportive friends.

At around 11:45 I experienced horrendous stomach pains and I just laid on the floor in serious pain, I was pushing into the bedpan and a few blood clots came out but no success so I called the nurse who gave me some pain relief and rubbed my back.

About ten minutes after, my waters broke, and this is kind of like a popping feeling, I felt like I had wet myself! The pain eased a little after this but then worsened and at about 12:05, dinner time, I pushed and pushed and the pregnancy came out.

I didn't see it although I did feel it come out, it just feels like a massive blood clot so it's nothing to worry about. After this, I had to wait for the placenta which came about five minutes after.

I was so relieved that it was over as I had suffered badly whilst being pregnant, I could only eat certain foods, I vomited frequently and I went into almost diabetic states at points so I was pleased for it to be over.

The nurses were so encouraging. My mini-labour lasted around 25 minutes and even though it was painful you've just got to think it's completely worth it. I felt better almost immediately, although I had a few stomach cramps they were nothing compared to the labour.

It is scary and an awful experience I am not going to sugar coat it but it is so worth it. I would recommend taking a friend or your boyfriend, although I didn't tell my boyfriend. I couldn't imagine what it would be like going through it alone.
